A lot of people treat hacking like it’s some kind of game. It’s fun, it shows how smart you are, and nobody really gets hurt, right? Wrong. That’s like saying you’re a burglar who breaks into houses, goes through women’s underwear drawers, and leaves without taking anything. Even if you don’t do any damage, you’re still a criminal. You’re still violating their privacy — with emphasis on the word violating. They don’t really know what you did or what you didn’t do. They don’t know what you looked at. They don’t know what information you copied or gave away. All

Bernanke testified before the congressional Joint Economic Committee today saying that while US economic growth is tepid and the Fed is "prepared to take action", households continue to spend!
On-the-other-hand he also said that individual consumers and businesses are extremely cautious about the economy.
Ignoring this seeming contradiction, can you imagine just how robust household spending would be if the economy actually did improve at some point...

Stanley Kurtz is covering that which some would have us believe isn't relevant:
On the evening of January 11, 1996, while Mitt Romney was in the final years of his run as the head of Bain Capital, Barack Obama formally joined the New Party, which was deeply hostile to the mainstream of the Democratic party and even to American capitalism...

According to a new poll conducted by WILX, a news station out of Lansing, Republican challenger Mitt Romney has taken a small, albeit statistically insignificant, lead over President Obama in Michigan: where private and public unions are essentially surrogates for the Obama campaign.
Romney - 46%
Obama - 45%

As Scheiber put it, Obama saw health care as a bigger long-term accomplishment. “There was a strain of messianism in Barack Obama, a determination to change the course of history,” Scheiber wrote. “And it was this determination that explained his reluctance to abandon his presidential vision.” So health care it was…

As everyone knows, President Obama is the personification of class.
The elegance and charm the Obamas bring to the White House is due, in large part, to the deep and classy respect that Barack Obama holds for his wife, Michelle.
And nothing says class and respect for your wife more than making her the public butt of an off-color sexual joke-
Like President Obama did last night at a Gay Fundraiser in Beverly Hills:

That question and others posed to Maureen Dowd by The Anchoress:
I have maintained for a while, now that Catholic teaching on sexuality is the teaching of an ideal, and a worthy one, because the pursuit of the ideal ultimately puts our focus not on ourselves but on God and our union with him; I’ve said (at least once) that I think the Catechism is thoughtful, wise and actually pretty broadminded on the issue of masturbation, but I know that gets drowned out by the tyrannical sentimentalist’s cry of “mean church, cruel church” which Dowd supplies in abundance, but...

Today, at a campaign stop in Texas, Romney said the President made the deliberate choice to let the economy stall while he focused on his “historic” health care bill: "That they knowingly slowed down our recovery in order to put in place ObamaCare ... is something that I think deserves a lot of explaining."

Scott Walker’s budget and pension reforms. Students were the first and last casualties of the ruthless Big Labor war against fiscal discipline.

The recession officially ended in June 2009, before the policies of Obama and the Democrat controlled Congress could truly kick in. We’ve discussed many a time what effects this continued malaise have occurred within the states, effects such as low income, sales, and property tax rates because so many people are out of work or underemployed, along with simply being frugal with what money they have (disposable income is at historical lows). Now we have yet more evidence that the policies of Obama and the Democrats have been utter failures

With 99% of precincts report, Gov. Scott Walker defeated Democrat Tom Barrett by 53-46, a larger win for Walker than his first win in 2010. It does look like the Senate might flip back to the Democrats, though. Lt. Gov Rebecca Kleefisch also easily won, and provides the quote of the night

If you were born in this country, you should be able to speak English, even if it’s just ebonics. Even to become a naturalized American citizen, you need to take an English test to prove you have a certain level of proficiency with English. So, if you’re talking with someone who has so little command of the English language that you need a translator to have a conversation with him, it’s highly likely that he’s not an American citizen.

Ostensibly, Scott Walker was up against Tom Barrett yesterday in Wisconsin. In actuality, his opponents were the unions. He was their great and cheesy boogeyman because he dared to put the interests of the state of Wisconsin above the interests of the union. Liberals loved getting another crack at Walker until he whomped Barrett like an electric whomping machine, but they don’t like to talk about the fact that Walker’s anti-union reforms were also a godsend for the state.

Forrest Griffin is one funny dude. Yes, that Forrest Griffin. The UFC Fighter. I’m laughing my way through Got Fight?: The 50 Zen Principles of Hand-to-Face Combat right now, but there’s one story from the book that is SO GOOD, I just had to share. The story is about manliness, how to respond to bullies, pride, and even unlikely victory, although some people won’t see it that way — hell, even he might not see it that way. In any case, this deserves to get out to a wider audience.

It is big news that the public employee unions experienced not just a loss in Wisconsin but a rout. Wisconsin has higher employment since Walker took office, lower debt, and even budget surpluses not to mention seeing its debilitating government unions losing power. The state to Wisconsin's south, however, finds itself in the opposite condition. Illinois sees businesses fleeing, taxes soaring, unemployment rising, budgets deeper in the red than ever, and unions still with a strangle hold on the state. The neighboring states are a study in contrasts, one in which Illinois does not come out looking very good at

Author's note: Interestingly, California's current tax on cigarettes, at 89 cents, is one of the lowest in the country, and nearly $4 cheaper then my home state's tax (New York).
Proposition 29, or the "Tax on Cigarettes for Cancer Research" ballot measure failed yesterday in California by the slimmest of possible margins. The proposal would have added an additional $1.00 excise fee to every pack of cigarettes bought within the state, which was heavily opposed by civil rights libertarians and tobacco companies.

In business there is something called “sunk costs” which refers to funds that have been spent and are unrecoverable. At any given point sunk costs are irrelevant to the decisions going forward. An example of this would be a company that has spent a billion dollars building a plant and now has to choose whether or not to spend another billion dollars hiring staff and actually operating the plant. At the point of the decision the only thing that should be relevant to the decision makers is what makes best sense for the firm going forward. Does the company make

At the State University of New York, the 2011-2012 school-year premium was $440 per student. Next year’s plan will cost between $1,300 and $1,600. Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C. paid $245 per student per year for 2011-2012. Next year, they’ll have to pay $2,507 to meet the law’s requirements. The University of Puget Sound paid even less last year—$165 a year—but will have to pay between $1,500 and $2,000 next year: more than twelve times their current insurance costs.
