I'd like to think this news is hopeful for the vast majority of people who actually think, rather than emote, about this coming election:
Despite concerted Democratic attacks on his business record, Republican challenger Mitt Romney scores a significant advantage over President Obama when it comes to managing the economy, reducing the federal budget deficit and creating jobs, a national USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds...

First there was the Brian Ross fiasco.
Now there's this:
Arlene Holmes, the mother of Colorado theater shooting suspect James Holmes, has suggested that ABC News mischaracterized her when it reported that her initial statement to the reporter, "you have the right person," was a reference to her son.
"This statement is to clarify a statement made by ABC media..."

Certainly, the NCAA has extracted a high price from the Penn State football program and one must question whether Penn State will be able to recover anytime soon. And it's a shame that players are being penalized as well.
However, on a broader note PSU's unpardonable actions, including the whole scheme and coverup are reflective of the corrosive role of sports in our society -- a mindless obsession that has

Body armor. Who buys body armor and why? I don’t know any hunters who by body armor. They’re not planning on shooting anything that could shoot back.
We already keep an eye on those who buy fertilizer.
Holmes’ weapons and armor were purchased recently and within a short period of time:

In a July 21 column by the editorial board of the New York Daily News, there is fault assigned for the massacre in a Colorado theater. The fault is not just assigned to killer James Holmes, but absurdly to Obama, Romney, the NRA and every American that wants to protect the Constitution of the United States. That's not too much hyperbole, is it?

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste” is the operating credo of every political opportunist anxious to offer us Perfect Security in exchange for our liberties. To counter evil when it inevitably arises is the last thing on the minds of those who would smother us for our own good. Simply enforcing existing, fundamental laws and making perpetrators, not guns or violent movies, responsible for heinous acts would be a crisis gone to waste for our would-be tyrants.

Defining moments in politics are strange beasts. Sometimes they're only recognized in hindsight, while sometimes they throw the train off the tracks before a sentence has been completed. Sometimes their effect can be contained and minimized, while sometimes their effect on the political narrative metastasizes. This one is very bad for the White House.

It’s official: Lady M is going to serve as the public face of Team Obama’s our new grass-roots mobilizing effort “It Takes One.” (Also available in our Spanish sub-titled version) Did she just call “you people” toads !? (snip)
it sounds to me like Lady M is suggesting that young couples - in addition to having their friends and family donate their wedding present to Team Obama – now spend their honeymoon soliciting votes for Big Guy (snip)
This new emphasis on the individual (snip) seems a bit counter-productive given Big Guy’s recent position that “you didn’t do that yourself.”

Sixty-five years ago last week the Exodus, then called the USS President Warfield, had its name changed for the last time as it embarked on what would be its last and most famous mission, bringing Holocaust survivors to the Holy Land. Back then the British were trying to curry favor with the Arab nations by preventing Jews from settling the holy land, today it is the President of the United States doing the same thing.
As the world ramped up to WWII the British caved into Arab pressure (that would never happen now--would it ?) and refused to allow any Jews

Let’s not call the Aurora shooting a tragedy. A tragedy is a car wreck that kills a family; a tragedy is a derailed train that poisons a town; a tragedy is a plane crash killing all on board. That’s not what Thursday’s monstrous act was – it was a massacre, it was an outrage. Some loony, nut case picked a gun-free zone where the pickings were easy. He didn’t “snap” – he planned it for months. That’s what gun-free zones do to Americans – they make them sitting ducks. 71 shot and 12 dead – if his gun hadn’t jammed,

Hussein Ibish is one of the more interesting Arab writers on regional affairs. In a piece published by the liberal site “Lebanon Now” he contemplates the broader meaning of the Libyan election. Although official results are not in yet it appears that the U.S.-backed National Forces Alliance led by the NATO-installed leader, Mahmoud Jibril, won a big victory.
In this light, Ibish critiques the idea that “assumes the inexorable rise of Islamist parties.” He is right and properly adds: “Libya shows that Islamists can be defeated in contemporary Arab elections, and this should be celebrated and emulated, not ignored or dismissed.”
