Paul Scott challenged us to look at what Eric Garland, a Progressive blogger, has to say and to take it seriously as a way to win the White House. Paul is right — we cannot make a convincing argument unless we know what our opponent in the argument believes. Insulting Paul doesn’t make us stronger. Rather than spin around in our own fish bowl, we have to look at what others are saying, correct their misconceptions, and either challenge or concede to their arguments head-on. In that spirit, I’m taking a serious look at Eric Garland’s post. I’m not giving

When America needed a leader, Mitt Romney was a manager

At the end of the day, Mitt Romney lost because he did not sufficiently articulate why Americans should go out and vote for him. He is a good and decent man and he attracted 49% of the vote. But elections are about winning. A nation doesn’t need a manager who says “Vote for me because I’ll do a better job than that guy”, it needs a leader who says “Vote for me because I’ll do this and I won’t do that”. Barack Obama left Christopher Stevens as a sitting duck and in the end he and three other Americans died.

I was about to snap the picture when I caught movement on the left of where I was standing so I stopped. A man, looking directly at what I was about to take a picture of, was motionless, arms crossed, standing erect and appearing quite focused. His lips were moving and given where we were, I knew he was praying.
I waited as I thought it´d be rude to include him in the shot I was looking to take. He continued to pray.
For whatever reason, he had captured my attention and I couldn´t walk away...

Over the last few days I have watched as political "analysts" and assorted pundits alternately lamented and rejoiced and "analyzed" the results of the recent election.
I have watched and listened as self-important, self-appointed authorities opined and pontificated on the "reasons" for Romney´s loss.
And, as I removed myself from the emotional turmoil that surrounds this event, and as I examined the actual data, I arrived at a conclusion at odds with all these "experts" and purveyors of "correct" viewpoint: Romney didn’t lose...

We have spent so much more than we have for so long that spending cuts alone probably will not be sufficient to eradicate our deficit, our debt, and fund our future entitlement programs. While we should certainly try to fix the problem just by cutting spending, it’s almost a certainty that we’re going to have to increase taxes at some point to prevent defaulting on our obligations. — John Hawkins, 5 Somewhat Unpleasant Assumptions I Make About Taxes, July 13, 2011

The Republican brand has been destroyed beyond repair. This is all something we really can blame on the Bush family in general and George W. Bush in particular. Not only do independents and moderates not trust anyone that has the millstone "Republican" hung around his neck, but even Republican voters themselves can no longer bring themselves to vote for members of their own party.

We are all suffering from the mistaken idea that our money is "safe" after we put it in a bank. The fact is your money is at risk every day as it sits in your bank or with your financial services provider. It isn´t necessarily because those institutions will waste it, misspend it, or invest it badly. It´s because of the newest yet the oldest financial problem, bank robbery.

It´s been a bad year for Britain´s state owned broadcaster, the BBC. First came revelations that Jimmy Savile, one of the Beeb´s most famous and flamboyant past personalities, had spent decades sexually abusing teen girls, but now the broadcast network´s new director has been forced to resign over a wholly separate story based on an un-sourced and ultimately false claim that a British Lord had similarly abused children years ago.

But a closer look at the advice the Times gives out proves that the so-called "paper of record" can´t even keep its anti-conservative agenda out of simple advice columns.
