It is Claire´s and my conviction that Christmas is just too big and beautiful to be contained in one day. So though we love December and its many and various anticipations of Christmas, our real celebration starts (not ends) on December 25th. While so many are weighed down by the post-holiday blues, we´re just getting underway! Are you interested in stretching your Christmas out to its fullest? Here are a few suggestions.

On NBC´s Meet The Press over the weekend, David Gregory was quite confrontational with the Vice President of the National Rifle Association over the organization´s idea of putting armed security guards in every school in America. But even as Gregory mocked the NRA for the idea, he seems to see nothing wrong with sending his own kids to a school that has armed security guards each school day.

Bear with me on this one. We are all flawed individuals. We´re all sinners. So let´s get that part out of the way. But there should still exist a means by which the measure of a man can be taken, whether or not he is someone you´d want to hang with, someone you´d want your children to look up to, someone you´d want your daughter or niece to marry. A few of them come to mind quickly...

Charity — helping people who have trouble helping themselves — is a good thing two times over. It’s good for the beneficiary and good for the donor, too. Stephen Post’s fine book, “The Hidden Gifts of Helping,” reveals that 76 percent of Americans say that helping others is what makes them most happy. Giving money makes us feel good, and helping face-to-face is even better. People say it makes them feel physically healthier. They sleep better.

If you live in New York’s Westchester and Rockland counties, The Journal News gave rapists, thieves and murderers the best Christmas present they could ever hope for… a roadmap of the homes they should avoid and those which they can target without fear. The Journal News decided to aid and abet criminals by publishing the names and addresses of hundreds of law abiding citizens who have a legal permit for a gun. A criminal’s worst nightmare is being confronted by a would-be victim who has the means to protect themselves and their family. The criminal’s intention is to commit their crime and

Despite concerns on the right that the movie was serving as a political propaganda piece for Team Obama, in actuality, the movie is rather apolitical, playing it pretty much straight down the middle. The movie does its best to avoid political commentary.

...And because we are given a movie that is evenhanded (were or were enhanced interrogation- oh, okay “torture”- not part of the narrative? It was, whether you agree they were effective or even necessary or not), those on the left are none too happy. I don’t believe the movie really makes the case for a pro-EIT agenda. It presents

From il Papa´s Christmas Eve homily: The question of God never seems urgent. Our time is already completely full. But matters go deeper still. Does God actually have a place in our thinking? Our process of thinking is structured in such a way that he simply ought not to exist. Even if he seems to knock at the door of our thinking, he has to be explained away. If thinking is to be taken seriously, it must be structured in such a way that the “God hypothesis” becomes superfluous. There is no room for him...

It is one worthy of study and acceptance even if only as an example of a way to
