the temporary fix ignored America’s underlying fiscal problems. It did nothing to control the unsustainable path of “entitlement” spending on pensions and health care (the latter is on track to double as a share of GDP over the next 25 years); nothing to rationalise America’s hideously complex and distorting tax code, which includes more than $1 trillion of deductions; and virtually nothing to close America’s big structural budget deficit. (Putting up tax rates at the very top simply does not raise much money.)

As I write Obama is either frolicking in the surf or hitting the links. He was so intent on his vacation that he had to autopen the fiscal cliff into law from Hawaii.
The Hawaiian setting makes for a very poignant contrast in the world of Barack Obama. And it is no small irony that Obama cavorts in the tropics having signed a into law a bill that raised taxes on the middle and lower class so that Goldman Sachs, among other wealthy entities, could enjoy corporate welfare courtesy of Harry Reid and Barack Obama.

When the Arab-owned TV network Al-Jazeera bought Al Gore´s Current TV Network, it likely imagined that it finally had its "in" into the U.S. television market, something the jihad-supporting network had for sometime hoped to find. But is it likely that Al-Jazeera´s purchase assure it of a ready-made American audience? It seems doubtful.

Chris Christie has never been a social conservative. He hasn’t even been a loyal conservative. Despite the fact that Mitt Romney considered Chris Christie for his VP slot and gave him a keynote speaking position at the RNC, Christie betrayed Romney by talking up Obama after he did the bare minimum to help the state in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Chris Christie’s approval numbers in New Jersey went up, but Romney’s numbers with independents plunged. It’s hard to know how many votes Christie cost Romney, but it wasn’t an insignificant number.
