Someone asked me, recently, what I thought the status is of the pro-life movement, and I said, “sort of stagnant.” Different polling shows different data (and as Sr. Mary Ann Walsh noted at the USCCB Media Blog, “it’s all in how you ask the questions”) but whether anything is really changing is anyone’s guess and tactics — on both sides — are awfully stale and predictable.

For the past four years, conservatives have been fighting a relentlessly rearguard, defensive action. For those same four years, conservatives have lost every rearguard, defensive action that they’ve fought. Or if they haven’t actually lost, the best that they’ve managed is a stalemate that stalls Progressivism, but doesn’t advance conservative values. Even the stunning 2010 “shellacking” proved ineffective, as shellackings really only work if you take over Congress entirely, rather than just getting half of it.

By my count, there have been at least seven budget/debt battles over the past two years in which Republicans have either deferred, punted, or caved. While they offer excuses for shirking from the battle at hand, they always emphatically promise to fight the next one.

Last week as Vice President Joe Biden talked publicly about his efforts to assist President Obama with his various gun-banning schemes, he made a startling new claim. He said that while golfing in Pennsylvania in 2006 he personally heard the gunfire from a mass shooting being committed at a nearby school. But did he really? Facts seem to run contrary to Biden´s late claim.

Things are getting rough out in Nevada. Democratic Assemblyman Steven Brooks was just arrested for "threats of physical violence" against Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, also a Democrat. Some reports even claim that a weapon was involved, or threatened to be used.

Phil, get out of California! Every productive American is being ground down by unjust, penalizing taxes. But living in deep blue states like California will cost you a lot more and a lot faster than if your business and property was headquartered in say, Texas or Nebraska. And though Texas has the sun I know you love, there´s an awful lot to be said for Nebraska too. We have (right now) a relatively responsive government, low tax rates and cost of living, terrific sports fans, and the best steaks in the country...

The 40th anniversary of Roe V Wade has me thinking a lot about "choice" today. For instance, I´m wondering just what choice the preborn boy or girl whose life is about ready to end via an abortionist´s suction machine would make. Does anyone really think the child would say, "Well, I certainly don´t want my mother to be unencumbered by the likes of me. So, let the dismemberment begin." Of course not.

Some might ask what doesn´t anger feminists these days, but what follows seems particularly silly:
My 4-year-old son, Emmett, swallows a spoonful of cereal and asks me if I know what a gentleman is. Surprised, I tell him I have some idea; then I ask what the word means to him.
“A gentleman lets girls go first,” he says, explaining that every day at naptime all the girls go to the bathroom before the boys.
His explanation, along with the quiet solemnity with which he delivers it, is completely endearing and yet it makes my heart ache...

Now that the last streamer from Inauguration Day 2013 has been thrown, it is now time for Barack Obama to do what he failed to do in his first term which is to focus on national security.
